Happy Friday, I'm sure you've seen by now that TikTok is set to be banned in USA by Sunday. But will it really be banned? And if so, what should your brand do? As of now, incoming President Trump will be able to technically bring back TikTok for up to 90 days. However, this still doesn't mean the App Store will choose to do so, since they are at massive risk of being fined $5,000 per user if he change his mind. In my opinion, Trump will likely give TikTok a 90 day extension and in that time period be able to broker a deal for them to sell or stay legal in the USA. In the meantime, we are diversifying heavily: YouTube and Instagram have put intense effort the last few months to replicate TikTok. These features concern their own shop features, as well as viewing features which compete heavily with the tiktok algorithm's addictiveness. TikTok Refugees are now moving to Red Note (Xiangchou), and this app is now #1 in App Store USA. It is likely possible this app could replace TikTok, in spite of also being owned by Chinese company. The issue with this app in my opinion is its heavily Chinese user interface which is clearly unprepared for Americans, so we will wait to see if English speakers adapt, move to other platforms, or most likely, the app will release a more English-friendly version. If you can, register your brand on Tiktok Shop internationally, in order to reap sales there: This includes Indonesia, Malaysia, The Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, The United Kingdom, Vietnam, Ireland, Spain. TT Shop is also launching in Germany, France, and Italy in 2025. In the meantime, your brand should make sure to have a diversified social commerce strategy with creators being sourced from all platforms. It will take longer to know exactly which app or opportunity has the most revenue driving potential for brands in 2025, but with this strategy it will put you in the best position to succeed at that point. |
